Started the assembling today with an all-over check on the covering, ironing all the joints and cutting out hatches. That took most of the afternoon.
Here are the major bits

Then did a dry run assembly to get a fell for the size !!! Quite impressive considering it's on a six person dining table to gauge the size.

Did some more building this afternoon..

Firstly fitted the tailplane (elevators are dry fitted to get measurements to tips of wings, to ensure that the tail sits square to the wing. Pinned in place to let epoxy set (24 hr)

Then fitted the rudder with "furry" hinges and thin Superglue. NIce fit.

Next was the engine box. Kit comes supplied with two. a long one for Glow engine and a short one for Petrol Zenoah.

Identified the correct parts and dry assembled then to ensure right and down thrust built in. Then PVA'd the sides to the fuselage and dry fitted the firewall/engine mounting plate to front. This will be glued with medium cyano and a few thin strips of fibreglass tissue soaked with cyano. This allows the engine to break away in the event of an "arrival", saving greater damage to the rest of the model (so the book says). It worked on my Glens Cap .

Wing strut brackets were added, being screwed onto the mounting plate for the undercarriage. The u/c was then bolted on, this trapping the brackets tightly in place.

The rear steerable wheel is just a normal type as supplied with the vast majority of ARTF's

Next, the engine was added, the normal mounting bracket being discarded and the engine being bolted straight onto the firewall from the inside. The top two screws were quite difficult to get to.and were replaced (changing a sloted head screw for a cap head screw. This allowed the driver to act at an angle, which was the only way to tighten it.

Carb and exhaust added to check clearance for cowl (they both fit inside without modification to cowl apart from hole for exhaust outlet.

You can see the fibreglass tissue strengthening on the engine box

Today, Just fitted up the wing struts.Instructions say to use self tappers into the wood of the wing, strengthening the threads with super glue. I thought this a bit fragile for continued buildup/breakdown, so I replaced the self tappers with 2mm set screw studs around 15mm long. These were screwed and epoxied in place. Now the struts will be held on the wings with Nyloc nuts and washers, with the studs staying in place at all times. There are small pieces of fuel tubing on each stud to dampen any rattles

Fitted ignition system today. I mounted the ign. box on a thin layer of compressed foam and made a plate to mount it on. I then cut holes for the various leads and plated the bulkhead underneath ready to accept three fuel lines (holes to be drilled later).

Now able to fit up the cowl for final positioning before drilling the mounting holes, getting a nice close fit between spinner and cowl. Note the right and down offset on the engine.

After the cowl was taped in place holes were drilled for the mounting screws, these were then fitted and finally the decals continuing the side stripes were added, This made the plane look a bit more finished.
